Metlox Plaza Tree Replacement to Begin

Sep 16, 2024 09:14AM ● By Mb News Staff
Visitors to Metlox Plaza in Manhattan Beach will see trees coming down this week... but not to despair; they will all be replaced with new and healthy trees.

The original sycamore trees planted in Metlox Plaza have been dying because the root area in the plaza is not deep enough to sustain them. In fact, some of those trees have already been removed. A second kind of tree that had been planted to replace the sycamores did not survive.

This week, nine trees will be removed and replaced with fruitless olive trees.

Prior to planting the new trees, the tree wells will be completely cleaned out, irrigation and electrical repairs will be made, and the soil will be properly prepped for the new olive trees to ensure the healthiest outcome.

The schedule will run as follows:

•           Wednesday, September 18, from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.: Remove and store all tables and chairs and put up a temporary fence to enclose the construction area. Also, remove all nine trees and grind tree stumps.

•           Thursday, September 19, from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.: Finish grinding tree stumps and start hand-digging the nine planters. Start installing olive trees and tree grates.

•           Friday, September 20, from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.: Finish installing the remaining olive trees and tree grates. Power wash the area, remove the temporary fence, and replace the tables and chairs.

Businesses will remain open and access to the businesses will be unobstructed during the operation.

Also worth noting: Painting of the three stairwells began last week, and the work is anticipated to be finished by the end of the month.
