City leaders this week formally unveiled a fancy new set of crosswalks where the Joslyn Center meets the Greenbelt, saying that the new crosswalks "fulfill a serious need."

The Four Crosswalk Improvements project enhanced the pedestrian crosswalks at Valley and 17th Street (midblock crossing in front of the Joslyn Center), Ardmore Avenue and 17th Street, Valley and 18th Street (midblock crossing in front of the Live Oak Park kid’s playground), and Ardmore Avenue and 18th Street to provide better visibility to motorists.

Previously these were uncontrolled crossings along the major routes for residents and visitors who visit downtown Manhattan Beach, Live Oak Park, Joslyn Center and many other city destinations. Now they are graded, repainted, and have fancy blinking lights to alert drivers of pedestrians.

"This really did fulfill a serious need," said Manhattan Beach Mayor Joe Franklin. "What was here before not only was dangerous in terms of the traffic but also had obstacles to walking and it wasn't in very good shape. But now not only is it properly graded, properly filled in and everything, we've also got the lights that actually indicate that there's someone in the crosswalk."

The project was funded by what city officials called a "strategic use of funds," combining transportation grant money and funding from the city's Capital Improvement Plan.

Seniors and other local residents gathered for the ribbon-cutting on Tuesday afternoon and tested out the new crosswalk lights for themselves.

"This crosswalk is just the beginning," said Acting City Manager Talyn Mirzakhanian. "The city remains committed to ensuring safer, more connected, and accessible routes for our residents and our visitors."
