Editor's note: MB News has offered each candidate for city council the opportunity to publish a "closing argument." Three were published Monday, and three on Tuesday. The order of publication was randomly selected.
----------------------------------------------------
My name is Nina Tarnay and I’m running for Manhattan Beach City Council. My journey to this point began over 45 years ago, when my parents risked everything for a better future for their children. As Boat People who escaped Communist Vietnam, my parents raised me with a strong sense of duty and service to our adopted country. Having come from loss and struggle, I’ve always been drawn towards community and hold steadfast, a commitment to doing what I can for those around me.
Twenty-five years ago, my husband and I were fortunate to settle in our beautiful city. We were drawn to Manhattan Beach by the promise of a close-knit community with outstanding public schools. My 3 children have thrived here and Manhattan Beach has become our extended family.
My experience in business, municipal, and contract law, as well as my previous work as city staff gives me a deep understanding of how the government works. As a former small business owner in the South Bay, I understand the challenges that owners face and know how to help businesses thrive.
For the past 10 years, I’ve worked in the field of water conservation and sustainability alongside leaders from neighboring cities and industries, forging strong relationships in our region. My diverse professional experiences have uniquely prepared me for work on Council and my endorsement list reflects this.
My commitment to service goes beyond my professional life. I’m an enthusiastic supporter of our schools; our youth sports programs; and philanthropic community organizations, including my work as a Board Trustee of Providence Little Co. of Mary Hospital. These relationships drive my sense of purpose.
As part of the campaign process, I’ve taken a deep dive to look at our city’s past and its future. The fundamentals of our city are all there — we have strong businesses; caring, talented and active residents; a safe community and great public services. If elected, I will work to further shore up these fundamentals.
I’m excited for our city. We have an opportunity to build a great future together through innovative and creative approaches to projects that will enhance the lives of our residents. As we move forward addressing city issues, there will undoubtedly be difficult decisions to be made, but with vision and the right guidance, I know our city will arrive in a better place.
I am excited for the future we can build together. I have the skills to help us navigate these uncertain waters. I have the drive and vision to help us forge ahead. From immediate goals like solving our e-bike problems to long-term goals like rebuilding our parking structures and expanding our community spaces, the next 4 years are going to define our town for the next 40 years.
Just like the journey I embarked on over 45 years ago, I look forward to a bright and exciting future for our city. I hope you share my vision and optimism and will entrust me with the task to help guide our city forward.
Finally, I want to share my gratitude for the immense support I’ve received throughout our city. It has been energizing to run a joyful campaign focused on solutions and common ground. I’ve enjoyed meeting people who I wouldn’t have otherwise met. It’s these connections that make for a great city. We are so fortunate to call Manhattan Beach HOME.
With Election Day now one week away, and our local vote centers opening up on November 2, I’d be honored to have your vote on or before Nov 5th.
