Manhattan Beach Fire Chief to Retire

Dec 02, 2024 06:46PM ● By Mb News Staff
Manhattan Beach Fire Chief Michael Lang will be retiring, the city of Manhattan Beach announced on Monday.

Lang will step down after a 32-year career in public service, including almost four years of leadership in Manhattan Beach. He will remain in his role while the city conducts a search for his successor.

“It has been a privilege to serve the residents of Manhattan Beach and lead the outstanding professionals of the Manhattan Beach Fire Department,” said Chief Lang in a statement provided by the city. “I am proud of what we have achieved together and am committed to ensuring a smooth transition for the department and our community.”

Lang joined the Manhattan Beach Fire Department in June 2021 with a commitment to modernizing operations and enhancing public safety. During his tenure, he is credited with improving emergency response capabilities, enhancing the fire prevention bureau and emergency preparedness function, increasing staffing, expanding internal promotional opportunities, and fostering stronger community partnerships and relationships with regional safety partners.

In 2023, he oversaw the unveiling of a new Fire Station 2 in East Manhattan Beach, replacing a nearly 70-year-old facility that had become obsolete.

Manhattan Beach Mayor Amy Howorth lauded Lang’s contributions in a statement. “Chief Lang’s leadership has been instrumental in making Manhattan Beach safer and better prepared for the future," she said. "His dedication to the well-being of our residents and his ability to inspire excellence within the Fire Department will leave a lasting legacy. On behalf of the City Council and our entire community, we wish him all the best in his well-earned retirement.”

City Manager Talyn Mirzakhanian similarly expressed deep gratitude for Chief Lang’s service. “Chief Lang’s contributions to Manhattan Beach have been nothing short of transformative," she said. "His dedication to public safety and his forward-thinking approach have elevated our fire department to new heights. We are thankful for his willingness to stay on as we undertake a thorough and inclusive search for our next fire chief.”

Prior to joining the Manhattan Beach Fire Department, Lang served the city of Arcadia for 21 years, moving his way up through the ranks from a firefighter/paramedic, fire captain, battalion chief and deputy fire chief before his appointment to fire chief in 2016. Previously, he served the San Bernardino County Fire Department for four years.

According to the city, the recruitment process to find Lang's successor will begin in the coming weeks.
