A male pedestrian was struck by a car and killed early on Monday morning in the 900 block of Sepulveda Blvd. in Manhattan Beach. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner has identified him as Michael Kawasaki, age 72. He was pronounced dead of blunt traumatic injury.

The crash shut down multiple lanes of Sepulveda until the early afternoon.

Manhattan Beach police released the following statement on Monday following the accident:

"Today at 6:28 a.m., MBPD received a report of a traffic collision in the 900 block of Sepulveda
Boulevard involving a pedestrian. Officers arrived on scene to discover witnesses already
performing life saving measures. Unfortunately, the pedestrian succumbed to his injuries at the
scene. The driver of the vehicle involved in the collision remained on scene and provided a
statement to investigators. Alcohol and drugs were not a factor in this collision."

The stretch of Sepulveda between 6th and 9th Streets in Manhattan Beach has been a site of ongoing concern because of a potential blind spot on a hilly portion of the street.

In 2013, a pedestrian and a motorcyclist were both killed in a crash between 6th Street and 8th Street. In 2011, a motorcyclist was killed in a collision with a car at 8th and Sepulveda.

The intersection at 8th and Sepulveda was re-striped and a dedicated left turn signal was added in 2018.

Nevertheless, that stretch of Sepulveda continues to be a high-risk zone. In 2022, a two-car accident at 6th and Sepulveda resulted in a toppled-over car, but passengers escaped without major injury.
