The Manhattan Beach Community Church has presented a nearly $11,000 gift to the Manhattan Beach schools to support student wellness programs.
MBCC announced the $10,955.56 donation to MBUSD on Sunday.
The donation is intended to support programs that increase safety and well being and
specifically reduce the possibility of gun violence in local
schools. Funds will be used to support K-12 staff training and
implementation of the Interrupting Bias and Clemson Olweus Anti-Bullying
programs at MBUSD.
The donation followed a talk at MBCC by Kerry
Riccio Aguero, MBUSD's director of student services, on
fostering student well-being by implementing a strong network of
services and support for students and their families. MBUSD's student services team partners with staff, families, students, and community
members to promote MBUSD goals and services related to health and safety and social/emotional learning.
“Our church is
uniquely situated in between Mira Costa High School and Pennekamp
Elementary School," said Rev. Mike Spitters of MBCC. "Additionally, MBCC is a referral counseling center offering
affordable counseling to students and families in need of support. We
look forward to exploring ways to further support MBUSD Students
Services. It was a joy to host Kerry as our Adult Discussion Group speaker and donate to a wonderful program."
The check was presented to Riccio Aguero by Lance Honea, former moderator and “Casino Night” organizer at MBCC, who noted that church community had "a lot of fun" raising the money at its casino event.
