On Tuesday, a driver being pursued by the Manhattan Beach Police Department took off on foot... only to be caught hiding on a rooftop of a building on Sepulveda Blvd.

The dramatic scene took place just after 1:00 p.m., when an MBPD traffic officer observed a reckless driver near Rosecrans Ave. and Sepulveda. According to MBPD, the officer attempted to stop the car, but the driver took off.

Following a short pursuit, the vehicle crashed into a traffic light at Sepulveda and 18th Street, after which the driver took off running.

"Thanks to some alert citizens and the MBPD drone, the suspect was found attempting to hide on the roof of a shopping center," wrote the police department in a social media post.

The suspect was found crouched on the roof of the Burger Lounge at 2000 N. Sepulveda and was subsequently arrested.

MBPD Using High Tech Equipment

Police use a high-end commercial DJI drone from the Matrice 30 series. These drones integrate wide, zoom, and thermal cameras with a laser rangefinder.

At a community meeting on MBPD's strategic plan last week, MBPD Chief Rachel Johnson said that new drone purchases were part of MBPD's upgrades to its crime-solving technology tools.

MBPD has also recently upgraded its in-car keyboards and computers, upgraded in-car cameras that now synch with body video cameras, upgraded body-worn cameras, added additional automated license plate readers (APLRs), and now use BlueCheck mobile fingerprint scanners to help police identify individuals quickly.
