While many students had already received national honors this year, Mira Costa closed out the school year with multiple additional achievements in athletics and the arts.
Athletic Achievements
Mira Costa High School boys' varsity volleyball delivered a dominant performance throughout the season, winning the CIF-Southern Section Championship, the CIF Regional Championship, and finally, the inaugural CIF State Championship with a 3-0 sweep in Fresno. The team maintained the No. 1 national ranking all season and ended with a 37-2 record. The JV team claimed the RUHS JV Tournament title, while the Frosh/Soph squad won the Foothill Classic.
Mira Costa’s varsity baseball team completed one of the most successful seasons in school history, finishing 28-3 overall and going undefeated (12-0) in Bay League play. The team also recorded a 26-game win streak and reached the CIF Division 1 quarterfinals. The 28 wins tied the program’s single-season record, and the team posted the highest winning percentage ever for Costa baseball.
Girls' varsity lacrosse finished as undefeated Bay League champions for the second year in a row and were finalists in CIF SS Division 1. Several players received All-Bay League honors, with first team selections going to Kate D., Bailey B., Peyton M., Emma B., and Piper D., and second team honors awarded to Maddie O., Lizzie W., Carly K., and Lauren F. The JV girls team also had a strong season, finishing 9-5.
In track and field, Mira Costa athletes made a strong showing at the CIF State Finals. Mac Lamkin finished 4th in the 300-meter hurdles, Ian Hansen placed 10th in the 800 meters, Tomek Gorzkowski finished 3rd in the pole vault, and the boys 4x800 meter relay team secured 2nd place. The boys' team placed 8th overall in the state.
The Mira Costa swim team also brought home honors at CIF State, with Bella Brito winning first place in both the 200 Free and 100 Breast, and Anderson Bennett placing 8th in the 100 Breast. Earlier, on the heels of a 4th Bay League sweep and undefeated season, Mira Costa swimmers wowed all at the Division 1 CIF-SS Championship meet. The girls team placed 2nd overall for the 2nd straight year, and the boys placed 4th, the highest ever placing in Costa boys' swimming history.
In boys' golf, Eric Dacosta made history by scoring 9 under par in Bay League competition—the lowest 18-hole round ever recorded in league history.
And the Mira Costa surf team continued its unprecedented streak, winning its 20th consecutive league title. Since the league’s founding in 2014, the team has never lost a single competition and this season also placed 4th in the state, further cementing their legacy of excellence.
Achievements in the Arts
Beyond athletics, students also shone in the arts.
In the arts, Mira Costa's Drama/Tech program won big at the JRay Awards for its Bright Star performance. Winners included Samantha Probst (Lead Actor in a Female Dramatic Role), the MCHS Cast and Stage Crew (Stage Crew/Technical Execution), and Conductor Mark McCormick (Student Orchestra of the Year).
Mira Costa's Tech Theater program also took top honors at the Fullerton Technical Theater Festival, winning first place overall. The students placed in all 7 design categories and ended up with 16 trophies in addition to the overall trophy.
The Mira Costa Choral Union and Vocal Ensemble both scored Unanimous Superior ratings (the highest possible honors) in singing and sight reading at the Southern California Vocal Association's festival in May.
Meanwhile, at the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association music festival, Mira Costa's Philharmonic, Sinfonietta, Symphony, and Chamber Orchestras (along with the Chamber Orchestra and String Ensemble from MBMS) all earned Unanimous Superior ratings.
And earlier in the spring, the Mira Costa Varsity Winter Guard team took 3rd place at the West Coast Winter Guard Championships.
