We know that "all the world's a stage," (Jaques in As You Like It, Act 2 Scene 7) so what better way to spend the summer than to enjoy Shakespeare in the park?
The nonprofit Shakespeare By the Sea organization will perform not one but two free shows at Polliwog Park in Manhattan Beach next week: As You Like It at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 17, and Julius Caesar at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, July 18. Both outdoor performances are free and open to the public.
However, as Shakespeare by the Sea offers its performances across the South Bay throughout the summer, it faces a funding shortfall. For its Manhattan Beach performance, there is an $8,631 funding gap.
To make a donation to continue supporting Shakespeare By the Sea, visit their donation page here. The organization will also accept donations in person at its performances; and there is a $5 per entry opportunity drawing at every performance, giving you a chance to win a selection of prizes.
As you support the shows, remember that losing free Shakespeare would be "the most unkindest cut of all" (Antony in Julius Caesar, Act 3 Scene 2); and it may be "forever and a day" (Orlando in As You Like It, Act 4 Scene 1) before we see free Shakespeare again.
("Well said; that was laid on with a trowel." Celia in As You Like It, Act 1 Scene 2.)
Shakespeare by the Sea is a nonprofit organization that was launched in 1998 by Producing Artistic Director Lisa Coffi. Its mission is to enrich the lives of individuals, youth and their families in diverse communities.
