Following the city's tradition of mayoral rotation, David Lesser became Manhattan Beach's new mayor on Tuesday night, replacing outgoing mayor Amy Howorth. This will be Lesser's third time serving as Manhattan Beach's mayor.

"I am so grateful for this opportunity to give back to the community," said Lesser at Tuesday night's meeting.

Also at the meeting, Councilmember Joe Franklin was named Mayor Pro Tem, which means he is next in line to become mayor when Lesser's nine-and-one-half month term as mayor is up.

Lesser said that he would work to build on the priorities that the City Council has already identified. At the top of the list, said Lesser, is the housing issue. Noting that many large housing projects are "coming down the pike," Lesser said that he would continue to work to ensure that the city is able to maintain discretion in the housing projects that are planned.

Lesser also cited crime prevention as a top priority, adding that he would continue to support the Neighborhood Watch program and the city's efforts to hire more sworn officers. Other issues he mentioned included balancing fiscal responsibility with high-quality city services; making investments in infrastructure, particularly in the downtown area; environmental awareness; disaster preparedness; and partnerships with local schools and businesses.

Meanwhile, Howorth's fellow councilmembers, as well former mayors and other community leaders, were on hand to thank her for her service.

Councilmember Steve Charelian thanked her for her compassion, generosity and hands-on dedication, citing in particular her effort to welcome victims of the L.A. fires with gift bags containing gift cards, referrals, and a letter of welcome.

"You’ve 'slayed' every council meeting as mayor," added Charelian.

Howorth expressed gratitude to her fellow councilmembers and community members, noting that they are in good hands with Lesser as mayor. "We're going to be just fine," she said.
