The South Bay nonprofit Sandpipers philanthropy has released the results of the 95th year of its Holiday Baskets Program.
Following fundraising events throughout the year, the Sandpipers were able to distribute basic necessities and festive treats to 100 families and 239 children in need in the South Bay at the end of 2025. Each basket had an average value of over $1,000 and contained basic household goods, grocery scrip for $300, clothing, shoe gift certificates, bedding, towels, personal hygiene items, toys, and gifts provided by sponsors such as Mattel and Lisa Acker’s Toy Drive.
The Holiday Baskets program began in 1931, during the height of the Great Depression, when seven women in Hermosa Beach saw the struggles their neighbors were facing and knew they had to act. Inspired by the book The Magnificent Obsession, which emphasized selfless acts of kindness, they gathered at the home of Mary Wilke Kellogg and founded Sandpipers with the goal of providing confidential assistance to local families experiencing temporary financial hardship.
