In a record-breaking weekend, Mira Costa athletes took four CIF (California Interscholastic Federation) Southern Section titles over the weekend: in boys' volleyball, boys' lacrosse, girls' lacrosse and boys' track and field.

The Costa boys' volleyball team kicked off the weekend on Friday, May 15, with a victory over longtime rival Loyola, with a sweep of 25-21, 25-22, 25-22. This is the second year in a row that the team has captured the CIF Southern Section Division 1 title.

The boys' lacrosse team followed on Saturday with a 9-8 victory over St. Francis, capturing the CIF-SS Division 2 title.

The girls' lacrosse team then claimed victory on Saturday by defeating Santa Margarita 12-6 to win the CIF-SS Division 1 title.

Then on Sunday, the boys' track and field team captured the CIF-SS Division 1 championship, with a final total score of 62, edging out Loyola (58) and Long Beach Poly (54).

"It's been an incredible year for Costa athletics," Mira Costa athletic director Mike Rosenthal told MB News. "It began with the girls' cross country CIF title in the fall, and kept going with the girls' beach volleyball title two weeks ago. Four titles this past weekend was amazing - Congrats to all the kids and coaches who worked so hard to get there."

The Southern Section is the largest of the CIF's section, encompassing most of Southern California except for the city of Los Angeles and the San Diego region. It consists of 569 schools and 82 leagues (Mira Costa is part of the Bay League).
