More than 3600 runners completed Saturday's 49th annual Manhattan Beach 10K, braving one of the hottest races in recent memory with temperatures soaring into the 80s.

The morning was peppered with heat warnings from both the city and race organizers, advising runners and spectators to do their best to stay cool and hydrated.

The top three men's finishers were Billy Atkinson of Redondo Beach, in a time of 31:49.87; Moises Marquez of Long Beach in 31:55.31; and Aaron Cohen of Torrance in 32:18.21. Despite the heat, both Atkinson and Marquez finished faster than the time of last year's winner.

On the women's side, Vanessa Beckett of Manhattan Beach came in first in a time of 36:21.79, followed by Jane Miller of Santa Monica in 36:33.22; and Lindsay Wandzilak of Manhattan Beach in 37:25.00.

The oldest finisher was Richard Maynard, 91, of Manhattan Beach, who completed the race in 1:43:25.3. Full race results are available here.

27 P.I.E.R. Runners Complete the Race

One of the MB 10K's most cherished tradition is to honor those runners who have participated in every race since its inception - at this point, for 49 years. The members of this group, known as the P.I.E.R (Participated In Every Race) Runners, are given special t-shirts and gift bags in recognition of their ongoing commitment to the race.

Michele Gravina, daughter of Major Avignon, said that Avignon planned to "retire" from the race next year after running the MB 10K 50 times. "We had such a great day," she told MB News after Saturday's race. "We are so proud of my dad."
