In the first event of its kind last week, Manhattan Beach's public school custodians and maintenance employees were honored for the work they do to keep MBUSD facilities in top condition.

A total of 58 members of the MBUSD Maintenance and Operations Staff were honored at an appreciation celebration held at Polliwog Park.

The event brought together representatives from the city, schools and community. At a brief ceremony, MBUSD Superintendent Kimberlie Linz and Mayor Joe Franklin both shared appreciation for the impact the employees make every day in Manhattan Beach schools.

The workers received canvas swag bags from MBEF with items from the city of Manhattan Beach, Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair, the Manhattan Beach Chamber of Commerce, MBX, and VEG ER For Pets. They also received certificates from the Manhattan Beach City Council thanking them for "their dedication and hard work in keeping schools safe, welcoming and well maintained."

Community donations included lunch from Gelson's, cookies from Becker's Bakery, beverages from Leadership Manhattan Beach, and a saxophonist from Coast Music.

At the end of the ceremony as he grabbed his swag bag, one employee said, "I've worked for MBUSD for 18 years, and this is the best moment ever."

The event was the brainchild of Manhattan Beach resident Janet Jones, who told MB News that she believes in the importance of acknowledging those who are often overlooked. Jones is the founder and director of the Single Mom Project, a nonprofit that provides $1,000 grants to low-income, hardworking mothers to help them get on steadier financial footing.
