Waymo, the driverless ride-hailing service, has announced that it is expanding to Manhattan Beach and the greater South Bay area this week.

Waymo's updated service map shows that the service area has been extended down the coast through Torrance and southeast to Lomita. Waymo also covers most of L.A.'s Westside, including Brentwood, West Hollywood, Silver Lake, and Echo Park. (It currently does not offer service to LAX.)

How do Waymo's self-driving vehicles work? Waymo vehicles use a series of sensors and software to collect information, producing a detailed 3D map that informs the car where it is and what is in its surroundings. The sensors are constantly scanning for others on the road (such as vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians). That information is processed in real time by the car’s software. Waymo has been serving parts of Los Angeles since 2024.

Riders must be 18+ to download the Waymo app and ride alone.

As a reminder, the MB Wave Rider - Manhattan Beach's on-demand electric ride service - is also available for 70 hours per week (cutting down to 30 hours per week as of December 1.) Riders can arrange for service through the Circuit app.
