The Arthur J, a new retro-style steakhouse at 903 Manhattan Ave. in Manhattan Beach

The Arthur J, a sleek new dining spot from star local chef David LeFevre, will formally open its doors on Tuesday, June 2. The restaurant, located at 903 Manhattan Avenue, will feature retro steakhouse favorites along with hand-crafted sides and artisan wines and cocktails.

The Arthur J pays homage to Arthur J. Simms – the family patriarch of LeFevre’s partners Mike, Chris, and Tom Simms who was known for his legendary hospitality – by welcoming guests into a stunning space evocative of a glamorous, 60’s Palm Desert getaway.

The menu includes an extensive selection of wet and dry-aged USDA Prime and Certified Angus beef prepared on the kitchen’s massive wood-fired grill. Diners may choose from an array of sauces such as chimichurri or house steak sauce; compound butters such as black truffle or yuzu kosho; and toppings (perhaps a sunny side up egg or buttered blue crab).

The menu also features classics such as Arthur J’s Pot Roast made with braised Wagyu short ribs, baby carrots, new potato and cippolini onion; Emmental popovers served with strawberry butter or Parker House rolls served with deviled ham; a jumbo shrimp cocktail with cucumber, celery hearts and radish; and Swedish meatballs with potato puree and dried fruit preserves.

Jerry Garbus, operating partner at sister restaurants Manhattan Beach Post and Fishing With Dynamite, is on board as beverage director. Garbus has procured an extensive wine list to compliment the steak-centric menu and has designed a special cocktail selection to fit the restaurant's retro theme. Cocktail enthusiasts will want to try the Cone of Silence, a vesper with vodka, gin, cucumber and sage; or Brannigan’s Boots, an old fashioned with rye, sarsaparilla and bourbon cherry.

The new home of The Arthur J has gone through a considerable transformation since its days as Circa restaurant. Designers Julie Fisher and Rachel Crowl of fcSTUDIO inc., who also worked on Fishing with Dynamite, created a mid-century modern architectural facade with walnut siding and  whimsical decorative concrete blocks.

The dining room features a polished walnut slated ceiling set against large custom banquettes with curved tight-backed cushions and teak table tops. In the bar area, black Brazilian slate floors and a black marble bar top with brass details add to a luxe Rat Pack-era feel.

The Arthur J will be open nightly for dinner, Sunday through Wednesday, from 5:00 pm to 10:30 pm and Thursday through Saturday from 5:00 pm to 11:00 pm.  For more information, visit The Arthur J on Facebook.  Reservations can be made by calling (310) 878-9620 or by visiting opentable.com.
