Three Manhattan Beach beach volleyball stars have landed themselves in the semifinals of the prestigious AVP Manhattan Beach Open. Lane Carico, Tri Bourne, and Phil Dalhausser and their partners played solid ball on Saturday, catapulting their duos into great positions of leverage.

Carico and Summer Ross, the No. 3 seed, emerged with a narrow 21-19, 21-19 victory over second-seeded South Bay native Emily Day and 2012 Olympic silver medalist Jennifer Kessy, of San Juan Capistrano. Ross and Carico have yet to drop a game in the four matches they've played on Carico's home sand.

For Bourne and John Hyden of Sherman Oaks, the duo snapped a seven-match losing streak to top-seeded Jake Gibb and Casey Patterson, combining for 28 kills in a 21-17, 21-19 victory to claim the first semifinal berth on Sunday.

The Bourne/Hyden duo hadn’t beaten Gibb/Patterson since doing so in the July 2014 AVP Milwaukee Open. The duo also laid claim to a 20-22, 21-19, 15-12 victory over 2014 AVP Manhattan Beach Open champion Sean Rosenthal and Theo Brunner on Saturday.

April Ross, the injured Kerri Walsh Jennings' usual partner, teamed with fellow Costa Mesa resident Jennifer Fopma to sustain their momentum from last weekend’s AVP Seattle Open title. The top-seeded women dominated No. 4 seed Kim DiCello and Kendra Van Zwieten, 21-9, 21-14, to grab their semifinal berth. Ross and Fopma, who have not dropped a game in the tournament, defeated Ali McColloch and Emily Stockman, 21-19, 21-14 in their earlier match on Saturday.

For Manhattan Beach resident Dalhausser, a four-time AVP Manhattan Beach Open champ, and Nick Lucena of Santa Barbara, the AVP MB Open exacted a measure of revenge from last weekend’s runner-up finish in the AVP Seattle Open final when the third-seeded duo cruised into the semifinals after knocking off No. 2 seed and AVP Seattle Open champions Ryan Doherty and John Mayer, 21-18, 21-9.

In unusual news, Jake Gibb and Casey Patterson – winners of this year’s AVP New Orleans Open and AVP Kingston New York City Open – were eliminated by the No. 13 seed, brothers Trevor and Taylor Crabb, 29-31, 21-17, 16-14, in a marathon match to conclude the day’s action. It is the third AVP semifinal appearance for Trevor Crabb and the first for the younger Taylor Crabb and the biggest AVP triumph in the siblings’ history together.

Redondo Beach resident Sean Rosenthal also lost his opportunity to repeat as a champion, as he and Theo Brunner lost a contenders’ bracket match to No. 19 seed Mark Burik and Curt Toppel, a Manhattan Beach resident, 17-21, 21-18, 22-20.

Sunday’s AVP Manhattan Beach Open schedule begins with the men’s semifinals (No. 3 seed Dalhausser/Lucena vs. No. 13 seed Crabb/Crabb; No. 4 seed Bourne/Hyden vs. No. 2 seed Doherty/Mayer) at 9:30 a.m. and the women’s semifinals (No. 1 seed April Ross/Fopma vs. No. 2 seed Day/Kessy; No. 3 seed Summer Ross/Carico vs. No. 5 seed Nicole Branagh/Jenny Kropp) at 10:30 a.m.

NBC Sports will broadcast the men’s final live at 1:30 p.m.; the women’s final follows at 3 p.m.

A special Manhattan Beach Open Legends exhibition match, featuring past champions of the legendary event, will take place on Stadium Court from 12-1 p.m.

General admission for the AVP Manhattan Beach Open Presented by Acer is free, and for the first time in the history of the tournament, the AVP will offer an elevated experience in its exclusive VIP Skybox. Offering panoramic views of the shoreline, pier and center court, the beach-chic VIP Skybox seating area includes full hospitality, access to a beer and wine bar and other amenities. In addition, exclusive VIP Corporate Cabanas offer lounge-style seating from the elevated view. VIP ticket packages are available online (based on availability).
