Measures C and EE, two bond measures to improve and update facilities at Manhattan Beach schools, won handily in Tuesday's election.
"We are extremely proud of the significant grassroots effort made by hundreds of volunteers to help get the measures passed," said campaign co-chair Jeff Serota. "These measures are a critical step in the continued investment in our schools and community, providing safe and quality facilities for years to come."
Measure C won with 9,068 votes or 70.32 percent of the vote. It focuses on fixing the district's elementary schools and preschool, of which the average age is 67 years old. The funds will be used to repair deteriorating roofs, plumbing, and electrical systems; replace portable classrooms; install air conditioning as needed; and renovate buildings for earthquake safety. The measure will raise $114 million for these needs.
Measure EE won with 8,581 votes, or 66.89 percent of the vote. It will rebuild Mira Costa High School's aging 65-year-old gym and athletics facilities. The new Athletics Education Complex will offer an economic, flexible design that will provide more usable space for students and the community. The measure will raise $39 million for this facility.
Measure C is estimated to cost about $15 per month for the typical homeowner; Measure EE is estimated to cost $5 per month; all tax-deductible. To determine your individual cost, multiply .0003 times the assessed value of your home found on your property tax bill.
The bond campaign represented an extraordinary grass roots effort across Manhattan Beach to get the message and the vote out for the bond measures. More than 360 volunteers reached more than 7,000 voters through phone calls and neighborhood walks. All told, the campaign distributed more than 1,500 yard signs and 7,000 stickers.
