Volleyball, Surf Events to Dominate the Weekend

Oct 11, 2017 07:40PM ● By Jeanne Fratello
It's going to be a beach-going weekend in Manhattan Beach, as two classic local fundraising events come to the sand and surf on October 14 and 15: the 4D Fours Volleyball Tournament and the Jimmy Miller Memorial Foundation Surf Fiesta.

On Saturday, October 14, the fourth annual 4D Fours Volleyball Tournament will be held at the Manhattan Beach Pier starting at 8:00 a.m. The cost to register is $160 per team in either the "fun" or "competitive" division; registration is open until midnight on Oct. 12.

The tournament honors Clint Clausen, owner of the former Manhattan Beach restaurant Four Daughters Kitchen, who died of a sudden heart attack in 2014 at age 44. The proceeds go toward Clausen's four daughters' 529 college funds, and also toward subsidized healthy heart screenings offered by Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance and the American Heart Association.

The event will also feature a silent auction with tickets to professional sporting events, hotel stays, private volleyball training sessions, and more.

On Sunday, October 15, the "Jimmy" - the Jimmy Miller Memorial Foundation Surf Fiesta - will raise funds for Jimmy Miller Memorial Foundation Ocean Therapy Program. This one-of-a-kind surf "contest" has a unique format that includes all levels of surfers, from first timers to rippers.

The event will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on the beach at 42nd Street in Manhattan Beach. The registration fee for participating surfers is $50, which includes the entry fee, breakfast, lunch, a t-shirt, and a chance to win raffle prizes.

The event also features an all-day silent auction and raffle on the beach. New for this year, there will also be a live auction at the beach during the break between round 1 and round 2. The event will give surf enthusiasts a chance to snag some great gear, enjoy a day out on the waves, and help the Marines, veterans and children who benefit from the JMMF's Ocean Therapy program.

The Jimmy Miller Memorial Foundation is a non-profit 501(c) 3 foundation dedicated to honoring Jim Miller by supporting the healing of mental and physical illness and injury through surfing and ocean related activities. Miller, a Manhattan Beach native, was a beloved surf instructor and lifeguard who passed away in 2004.
