The Manhattan Beach City Council on Tuesday night voted unanimously to re-open the remaining "green spaces" in parks across the city, including Bruce's Beach.

At the newly reopened spaces, visitors will need to continue to maintain proper social distances of six feet or more from others who do not live in the same household. Face coverings will continue to be strongly encouraged.

The move came after a brief discussion in which Manhattan Beach Parks and Rec Director Mark Leyman reported no significant issues with the green spaces that had been open over the past week. 

Manhattan Beach Mayor Richard Montgomery noted that when he visited Polliwog Park over the weekend, the park was about one-third full, and the spacing was wide open. "No one caused any problems," he added.

The opening of the green spaces is part of "Phase 1," or the "no-touch" phase of the city's multi-phased plan for re-opening all of the parks. It includes the opening of green spaces and walkways, with social distancing required. 

Playground equipment, sports fields, tennis courts, dog parks, bathrooms, and other facilities that would involve contact or touching of gates or door handles will remain closed.

However, city staff is working to implement parts of Phase 2, including permitting singles tennis through an online reservation system. Public tennis courts are expected to reopen later this month.
