Pa-Do Opens in Downtown Manhattan Beach

Dec 01, 2021 12:43PM ● By Jeanne Fratello
Pa-Do Dumpling and Noodle Bar, a friendly spot with an adventurous menu, opens today in Downtown Manhattan Beach at the former site of Fonz's Restaurant.

A weekend preview menu featured well-known favorites such as xiao long bao (soup dumplings with pork) and tan-tan ramen; as well as creative new bites such as "cheese steak dumplings."

There are many more surprises to come, promised Chef Al Kim, who hinted at new features such as Chicago-style pizza dumplings and chicken pot pie dumplings.

"We’re not limiting ourselves to just one cuisine," said Kim. "We have different types of noodles from different countries, and all different kinds of dumplings."

Kim added, "The inspiration comes from taking traditional Asian dishes, and trying to be thoughtful about each one, such as how they would work to my palate - and more importantly, Manhattan Beach's palate - all while using incredibly fresh ingredients."

"Just A Really Fun Place To Be"

Pa-Do is the brainchild of partners Chef Al Kim, Kirk Kim (no relation to Al Kim), and Ron Kripalani.

"Chef Al," as he is known, is well known to South Bay diners, having served as chef at the 900 Club as well as having leadership roles at Rock'N Brews and Rock'N Fish.

"Pa-Do" means "ocean waves" in Korean, explained Kim, adding, "Kirk and I are both Korean, and we thought it was very appropriate for where we are by the beach."

The restaurant is open and friendly, with plenty of seating at the full bar, as well as window seating and a spacious dining room.

"I see it being a very social place. We have so many shared plates, and dumplings are made to be shared," said Kim. "Actually, it's just a really fun place to be."

Pa-Do is located at 1017 Manhattan Ave. in Manhattan Beach; phone 310-376-1536. It will open at 5:00 p.m. tonight.
