As temperatures soared last weekend, more than 140,000 visitors were drawn to the beach in Manhattan Beach - and lifeguards performed more than 100 rescues.

All told, it was the busiest weekend of the year to date, according to the Los Angeles County Lifeguards.

Ocean Lifeguard Jake Miller told MB News that between Thursday, April 7 and Sunday, April 10, Manhattan Beach had:
  • 142,000 beach visitors
  • 108 ocean rescues
  • 46 medical interventions
  • 3,105 preventive actions by lifeguards

Lifeguards Call for Beach Safety Awareness

With more warm weather as the summer season approaches, Miller and the L.A. County Lifeguard office urged beachgoers to be mindful of beach safety guidelines.

Miller told MB News that swimmers should always swim, surf, and body board in front of an open lifeguard tower. Beachgoers should also check in with a lifeguard for updates on ocean conditions in the area.

Miller added that beachgoers should only swim, surf or body board within their ability levels - and know their own limits.

Furthermore, the beach is currently in springtime conditions, which means that large inshore holes and strong rip currents are likely. Lifeguards at any open stand should be able to advise about current conditions in the immediate area.
