UPDATE: The Saturday performances have been cancelled as well. Unfortunately, the show will not be able to continue for any additional performances.

Multiple confirmed COVID-19 cases among the cast, crew, and production team in the Mira Costa Drama/Tech Department have resulted in the cancellation of several upcoming Beauty and the Beast performances.

The Thursday and Friday (April 28 and 29) shows have been cancelled, as well as a special Wednesday (April 27) performance for students.

Desiree Brown, the head of publicity for the Mira Costa Drama/Tech Boosters said that the group would be in touch with ticket-holders about those shows.

At press time, the outcome for the Saturday shows has yet to be determined. The ticket sales site is currently closed. Interested theater-goers should email [email protected] to be alerted about Saturday shows.

Audience Potentially Exposed

Two performances of Beauty and the Beast were held last weekend, on April 22 and 23.

Manhattan Beach Unified School District Superintendent John Bowes sent a message to all parents on Tuesday noting that there were "multiple confirmed cases of COVID-19 at Mira Costa High School, specifically among individuals involved with the production of Beauty and the Beast."

Bowes wrote: "While none of these cases were known at the time of the [April 22 and 23] performances, public health guidelines define the contagious period as beginning 48 hours prior to symptom onset or a positive test. Thus, if you attended a performance on Friday or Saturday, April 22 or 23, 2022, or if you know anyone who was in attendance, we want you to know that everyone in the auditorium is considered to be potentially exposed."

Bowes also provided the following guidance from the Los Angeles County Department of Health:
  • It is strongly recommended that everyone who attended a performance masks at all times for 10 days (with day 1 being the day after the performance they attended), both indoors and outdoors, except when eating or drinking. A well-fitting, non-cloth mask of multiple layers of non-woven material with a nose wire is advised. See ph.lacounty.gov/masks for more information.

  • It is strongly recommended that everyone who attended a performance gets tested at least once within the 10 days after the last date of exposure, preferably within 3 to 5 days after the date of the performance. Individuals who had a positive COVID-19 test in the past 90 days are exempt from testing recommendations/ requirements.

  • All individuals who attended a performance should monitor their health for 10 days after the date of the performance. If symptoms of COVID-19 develop, they should remain at home and test immediately. Individuals who test positive for COVID-19 should isolate at home following Home Isolation Instructions for COVID-19 (ph.lacounty.gov/covidisolation) and, if a student or staff member, notify us.

Beauty and the Beast had marked a triumphant return to live musical productions for the Mira Costa Drama/Tech Department after two years cancelled due to the pandemic.

There are currently 35 student COVID-19 cases and three staff cases among the Mira Costa High School population, according to the MBUSD COVID-19 case count dashboard.
