Ocean Water Quality Rain Advisory Extended

Rain at the Manhattan Beach Pier on Saturday morning.

Editor's Note: The water quality rain advisory has been extended until noon on Tuesday, January 17, due to ongoing rains.

We need the rain, and we love the rain, but it definitely puts a crimp in our New Year's Day Polar Bear Plunge plans. With the ongoing precipitation, the county's ocean water quality rain advisory has been extended through Tuesday.

The advisory, which applies to all Los Angeles County beaches including Manhattan Beach, will be in effect at least until 7:00 am, Tuesday, January 3, 2023 (72 hours after significant rainfall). Beach users should avoid water contact for at least 72 hours after significant rainfall.

According to the L.A. County Department of Public Health, bacteria, chemicals, debris, trash, and other public health hazards from city streets and mountain areas are likely to contaminate ocean waters at and around discharging storm drains, creeks, and rivers after a rainfall.

Stormwater pours out underneath the Manhattan Beach Pier on Saturday morning.

Bacteria levels may remain elevated up to 3 days depending upon the intensity of the rain and the volume of runoff. Elevated bacteria levels in ocean water may cause illness to those who enter the water, especially children and the elderly.

Recorded information on beach conditions is available 24 hours a day on the county's beach closure hotline: 1-800-525-5662. Information is also available at PublicHealth.LACounty.gov/Beach/.
