Mitchell Expresses Support for Bruce Family Decision to Sell

Feb 18, 2023 08:39AM ● By Mb News Staff

L.A. County officials present official documents to members of the Bruce family at a ceremony in Manhattan Beach on July 20, 2022.

The sale of the Bruce's Beach beachfront property by the Bruce family back to L.A. County for $20 million was finalized on January 30.

Yet the sale had prompted criticism of the Bruce family from some activists who believed that the present-day Bruces should have done more to keep up the momentum of reparations and preserving the Bruce family legacy.

However, this week, L.A. County Supervisor Holly Mitchell provided the following statement to MB News in support of the Bruce family's decision to sell back the land:

“I’m proud of the work of Los Angeles County and the state in establishing a process to address systematic racist acts that have cost Black families generational wealth," said Mitchell. "The return of Bruce’s Beach to the rightful heirs of Charles and Willa Bruce will continue to serve as an example of what is possible across the globe when you have the political will and leadership to correct the injustices of the past. I fully support the self-determination of Black people and families like the Bruce’s to decide what is best for their lives and legacy. I will continue to advocate for the Bruce family to be fully informed and prepared for the immediate and long-term implications of this sale.”

In related news, the city of Manhattan Beach will be dedicating its new Bruce's Beach plaque on Saturday, February 25 at Bruce's Beach Park.

Note that the L.A. County-owned property is the beachfront property that once belonged to the Bruce family; while Bruce's Beach Park is city-owned property that lies directly to the East. The city's plaque will face Highland Ave.
