Editor's Note: This story has been updated to reflect that the event (originally scheduled for February 25) was postponed due to inclement weather. This event will now take place on March 18 at 10:00 a.m.

The city of Manhattan Beach will unveil its new plaque at Bruce's Beach Park on Saturday, March 18 at 10:00 a.m. The event will feature a ribbon cutting and include official remarks by Mayor Steve Napolitano as well as guest speakers.

“It is important that we remember and honor the history behind the area we now call Bruce’s Beach Park,” said Mayor Steve Napolitano. “While we cannot change what happened nearly 100 years ago, neither should we run from it. We have taken great strides to better understand that difficult chapter in our history and embrace the lessons we can learn from it. By shining a light on the truth of the injustices of the past, Manhattan Beach has begun a new chapter of recovery and healing. Today, we are an inclusive, loving and caring community and this new plaque reflects that.”

The City Council has also commissioned the creation and installation of an art piece and landscaping around the plaque to honor the history and legacy of Bruce’s Beach. A Request for Proposal is currently being developed for the art piece.

In January, the City Council voted to move ahead with the installation of this new plaque with the knowledge that the art piece and landscaping - described as a "meditation garden" - will come later.

The new plaque language, which was approved by the City Council in March 2022, explains more of the Bruce's Beach history.

There will be a stand next to the plaque with a QR code linking to the full Bruce's Beach history report on the city website.

The city's new plaque (to be installed at Bruce's Beach Park on Highland Ave.) is not to be confused with a second, different plaque created by Los Angeles County. The county's plaque has already been installed on the Strand in front of the lifeguard training facility property that was once owned by the Bruce family.

The city has created a Bruce’s Beach web page to explain more about current happenings as well as the history and background of Bruce’s Beach.
