It's been a busy past few days in Manhattan Beach. Here's what you need to know from this week:

President's Day Weekend: For President's Day on Monday, city offices will be closed. No construction will be allowed on Monday. However, street sweeping and trash collection will proceed as usual with no break in the schedule. Joslyn Center and Manhattan Heights will be open on Monday for regular scheduling.

Businesses Sought for Support Our Schools Week: MBEF is seeking businesses or individuals to participate in this year's Support Our Schools Week (March 20-26). The deadline to make a commitment is February 28.

Luxury Ski Trip: Simms Restaurants and Advanced Airlines are offering an exclusive "daycation" luxury ski trip to Mammoth Mountain on March 12. The trip departs on a semi-private plane from Hawthorne Airport, and includes breakfast on the plane, three hours of skiing, a catered lunch, more skiing, and then a flight that returns to Hawthorne by 5:30 p.m. The cost is $685 per person and there are 18 seats available.


Support for Bruce Family Decision: L.A. County Supervisor Holly Mitchell has given Manhattan Beach News an exclusive statement in support of the Bruce family's decision to sell the beachfront property back to L.A. County.

National Merit Finalists Named: Eleven Mira Costa High School students have been named National Merit Finalists: Benjamin Blum, Andrew Cherry, Karyn Fu, Kyle Fukumoto, Tucker Anthony Gauss, Ethan Harrison, Alexander Holcomb, Heather Jensen, Cindy Lin, Dashiell Rumble, and Jacob Tan. These students will now be considered for National Merit Scholarship Awards to be offered in 2023.


$1 Million Grant for Friendship Clubs: The Friendship Foundation has received a $1 million federal grant to support and expand its Friendship Clubs. The first Friendship Club was formed at Mira Costa High School in 2005.

Greenberg Named to MBUSD Board: Manhattan Beach school board members have named parent and longtime school volunteer Bruce Greenberg to the MBUSD board. Greenberg will serve out Jason Boxer's term, which ends in 2024.

Manhattan Beach Artists Wanted: Manhattan Beach artists, young and old, are being asked to send their best work to various local competitions. The Neptunian Woman's Club is looking for K-12 artists for its annual art competition. The Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair is looking for designers for its new logo. And the Congressional Art Competition is seeking art from students in grades 9-12.

Wine Auction Tables Available: The prestigious Center Court tables for the Manhattan Wine Auction (to be held on June 10) are now available. Make sure you are at the center of the action and reserve one before they are gone.

National Award for Mira Costa Cheer: The Mira Costa Cheer Team earned a second-place medal in a prestigious national competition in Florida. This is the team's fifth time competing at the championship and its first time medaling in the competition.

Manhattan Beach Distinguished Schools Honored: Meadows, Pacific, and Pennekamp elementary schools were honored in Anaheim this week for being named among the 2023 California Distinguished Schools. The three were among 356 elementary schools in California that were selected for the statewide honor.


Mira Costa Drumline, Winterguard Take First Place: The Mira Costa Indoor Drumline and the Mira Costa Winterguard Team both took first places at their first official competition of the season at Upland earlier this week.
