It's been a banner year for the Mira Costa High School swim team, and now the national rankings have made it official: Six Costa swimmers have been named to
the 2023-24 All-America Swimming list in nine different events by the National Interscholastic Swimming
Coaches Association, more than any other year in Mira Costa history.
To make this coveted list, a
swimmer or relay must post one of the top 100 times in the United States
during the high school season. The All-American swimmers, and their national rankings, include:
• Bella Brito - 100 Breast (8th), 200 IM (11th), & 200 Free (81st)
• Delaney Herr - 100 Back (24th) & 100 fly (48th)
• Wilson Tunila - 500 Free (47th)
• Girls 200 Medley Relay (25th): Delaney Herr, Bella Brito, Andi Taylor, Shea Steggell
• Girls 200 Free Relay (99th): Bella Brito, Shea Steggell, Andi Taylor, Delaney Herr
• Girls 400 Free Relay (32nd): Delaney Herr, Heather O’Brien, Shea Steggell, Bella Brito
• Delaney Herr - 100 Back (24th) & 100 fly (48th)
• Wilson Tunila - 500 Free (47th)
• Girls 200 Medley Relay (25th): Delaney Herr, Bella Brito, Andi Taylor, Shea Steggell
• Girls 200 Free Relay (99th): Bella Brito, Shea Steggell, Andi Taylor, Delaney Herr
• Girls 400 Free Relay (32nd): Delaney Herr, Heather O’Brien, Shea Steggell, Bella Brito
All told, this is the largest number of events in which Mira Costa swimmers have been named All-Americans in the school's history. (50 years ago, in 1974, nine swimmers made All-American in seven different events.)
Earlier this year, the Mira Costa swim team dominated the 2024 Bay League Swim Championships in Santa Monica, winning all four divisions for the third
year in a row.
"I'm so incredibly proud of this year's team," Mira Costa Swim Coach Heidi Nelson told MB News. "This year's varsity team was amazingly talented, hardworking and
close-knit. They pushed and supported each other to perform at
incredible levels throughout the season in both individual and relay
events, resulting in 10 of 22 new school records...The hard work, talent
and the overriding culture of pride and support these swimmers had for
Costa swimming and one another ultimately created a really fun and
successful swim season."
