Two residents have filed papers to run for the two open seats on the Manhattan Beach Unified School district's school board.
Jen Dohner: Dohner, a parent of two MBUSD students and a community volunteer, currently serves as a
Cultural Arts Commissioner for the city of Manhattan Beach. She also
served on the Committee to Renew Measure MB and on MBUSD's VAPA (Visual and Performing Arts) Committee,
which oversaw the allocation of Prop 28 funds for arts and music in schools. She holds an MBA from USC.
Cathey Graves: Graves, a current board member who was elected in 2020, is the current president of the school board. An attorney and CPA, she has had four children go through the Manhattan Beach public schools. Graves also has multiple years of volunteer leadership in the schools, from Pennekamp PTA president, to president of the PTA District Council. She has also served on the MBEF board, and as leader of two of the area's primary volunteer organizations for teens, Amigos Unidos and National Charity League South Bay.
With just two candidates for two open seats, it will not be a contested election. That stands in contrast to the last school board election in 2022, where six candidates ran for three seats.
Bruce Greenberg, who was appointed in 2023 to serve out the remaining school board term of Jason Boxer when Boxer resigned, has reached the end of his term. Greenberg told MB News that he has opted not to run for a new term, given that his oldest has graduated and his youngest is a senior at Mira Costa. "It has been an honor to serve on the school board and to give back to the district that has served our boys so well," he said.
