The beach was a little bit quieter - and the 8:00 a.m. hour was a little busier on the roads - as thousands of young people in Manhattan Beach made their way back to school for the 2024-2025 school year on Wednesday.

"I am excited for the new school year and look forward to the learning and success that will unfold across our district," said Manhattan Beach Unified School District Superintendent John Bowes. "It was wonderful to visit each school site on the first day with the district leadership team to welcome our students and staff. I am filled with optimism about the year ahead, as we continue to celebrate our community’s achievements and uphold educational excellence."

Manhattan Beach schools hired a number of new leaders this year, including new principals for  Mira Costa High School (Jennifer Huynh), Manhattan Beach Middle School (Luke Olesiuk), and Robinson Elementary (Katie Cavallaro); and a new director of early learning (former Robinson Principal Jacqueline O'Sullivan).

Other site leaders include two new vice principals for MBMS (Brittany Brashears and Sheri Hynding) and a new vice principal for Mira Costa (Scott Hughes).

A day earlier, MBUSD staff had kicked off the school year with an Opening Day theme of "Exceeding Expectations, Building Collaborative Connections."

"I am grateful to work alongside our students, staff, families, MBEF, MBX, PTAs/PTSAs and community partners," said Bowes. "Wishing everyone a fantastic school year!"
