The Mira Costa High School Visual Arts Department returned to Resin Gallery last week for the 8th consecutive year to host its highly anticipated 9x12 Art Fund and Visual Arts Exhibit, an event blending student creativity, community celebration, and vital fundraising for the arts.
This annual showcase featured original artworks created by students across various visual arts classes. Each piece was sold for $50, giving guests a unique opportunity to support local youth artists while taking home one-of-a-kind works. Tickets were priced at $25 per person, with complimentary admission for Mira Costa students. A taco truck added to the festive atmosphere, offering $10 plates that drew crowds to the gallery’s outdoor space throughout the evening.
The exhibit, now a South Bay tradition, was not only a display of student talent but also a judged competition. Professional artists associated with Resin Gallery served as jurors, evaluating pieces across a range of media and themes. Awards were given in multiple categories, including Best in Show and People’s Choice, offering recognition and prizes to outstanding student artists.
Cory Kluthe stood out among the submissions, receiving both Best in Show and Best Mixed Media for her piece “Kore,” which judges cited for its emotional resonance and layered symbolism.

AP Studio Art student Ingrid Knap also made a powerful impression with her piece titled “Church,” part of her sustained investigation into the theme of “connection without touch," exploring emotional intimacy in the absence of physical closeness. “I wanted to show how two people can share something real without needing to physically reach out,” Knap explained.

Adding to the evening’s ambiance was live music performed by students Erin and Maya, both enrolled in the AP Studio Art program. Their acoustic set created a warm, inviting atmosphere as attendees browsed artwork, chatted with student artists, and placed votes for the People’s Choice award. “You get to pick a piece you’re proud of and see other people’s art,” said Erin.
Beyond the awards and the sales, the 9x12 Exhibit aims to raise funds and awareness for Mira Costa’s Visual Arts program. Proceeds from the event directly support classroom supplies, field trips, and guest speakers, ensuring that the arts remain an accessible and enriching part of every student’s education.
For many of the young artists, this was their first time exhibiting in a professional gallery setting— validating their hard work and inspiring them to continue creating.
