Memorial programs for Ford Savela’s June 3 dedication.
Grand View Elementary School held a memorial ceremony this week to honor the life of Ford Savela, a former student who was killed in a hit-and-run car accident in January The tribute included the unveiling of a commemorative plaque in the school’s garden, where Savela once played and learned.
The ceremony was attended by Savela’s parents and older brother, alongside dozens of students, teachers, and community members. Many of the attendees were students from his former classes, both peers and younger students who had heard stories of his kindness, intelligence, and warmth.
A poster board displayed photographs from Savela’s childhood, along with a poem he had written, offering a glimpse into the creativity and character that defined him. The tribute was organized by a group of Grand View parents, a testament to the lasting impact he made on those around him.
Two former principals of Grand View Elementary were present for the occasion, including Savela's principal, Rhonda Steinberg. Several speakers reflected on Savela's legacy, including close friends Lane Stoddard and Logan Gilefsky, as well as his former teachers Carrie Fairbrother and Julie Brancato.
“Ford was the kind of student who made a lasting impression,” said Fairbrother. “I now keep a picture of him in my classroom to remind myself every day to be the kind of teacher students are proud to learn from.”
Stoddard shared a personal memory of Ford’s frequent visits to her home. “He would bolt right into my house and make a beeline to my pet bunny. He absolutely loved him,” she said, prompting smiles among the crowd. She also spoke of Ford’s academic accomplishments, noting that he had been accepted to ten colleges, including four University of California campuses. “I just hope he knows how proud of him we are,” she added.
The newly installed plaque marks a corner of the garden where students and staff can reflect on Ford’s life and legacy. It stands as a permanent reminder of a young man who left a profound mark on the Grand View community and the joy, friendship, and compassion he brought into the lives of those who knew him.
Another ceremony will be held at Mira Costa High School at 4:45 p.m. on June 9 near the history building, honoring Savela’s legacy by planting a tree.
