23 Mira Costa Athletes Honored at Spring Signing Day

On the 2026 spring signing day, Mira Costa High School honored 23 student athletes who will be taking their athletic careers to the next level in college sports.

Leoni Biegert will attend the University of Colorado Boulder this fall, joining the Buffalos’ track and field program. A specialist in long sprints and relays, Leoni is excited to compete within the Big 12 Conference. Off the track, she will pursue a degree in political science with aspirations of attending law school. During her time at Mira Costa, Leoni was a four-year member of the track team while also balancing two seasons each of cross country and soccer. Her high school career is highlighted by breaking the long-standing school record in the 400m and anchoring several league-winning relay teams. Notably, she was a key member of the squad that set a new Mira Costa school record in the 4x100m relay. Leoni secured a Bay League title in the 400m and earned the opportunity to compete at the California State Track and Field Championships as well as the prestigious Oregon Relays. Beyond the high school arena, she was a long-time competitive soccer player, reaching the ECNL/RL National Finals twice with her club team. A consistent Scholar-Athlete and Honor Roll student, Leoni takes as much pride in her academic discipline as her athletic achievements. She thanks her coaches, especially Coach Moe, for their unwavering support and encouragement over the years, and is looking forward to starting her next chapter in Boulder.
Ryan Burger, a middle-distance runner, will be majoring in life sciences at UC Riverside while competing for the Highlanders track & field and cross-country teams. Ryan competed all four years at Mira Costa in both track and cross country and has been a member of the varsity teams since his junior year. As a freshman, Ryan was a scoring member of one of the best freshmen XC teams at Mira Costa, helping the team win every meet of the season. As a sophomore, he was the Bay League champion in the frosh/soph 1600m and was named MVP in track. During his junior year, Ryan was a member of the 4x800 relay team that placed second at the CIF state meet. At the 2025 Nike Outdoor Nationals, Ryan won his heat and finished second overall in the Emerging Elite Mile with a time of 4:12. So far in his senior year, Ryan has run a personal best of 1:52 in the 800m and is a member of the Distance Medley Relay team, currently ranked #1 in the state and #3 in the country. He will graduate with school
records in the 4x800, distance medley, and sophomore 4x400. Outside of
athletics, Ryan plays guitar and piano, and he also plays trumpet in the
school Wind Symphony. He is a proud scholar-athlete making the honor
roll every semester since freshman year. Ryan is thankful for the support of his family, teammates, and coaches, especially Coach Hunter and looks forward to continuing his running career at UC Riverside.
Riley Campion has committed to become a scholar-athlete at UCLA, studying English and creative writing and joining the women's water polo team. Riley was born in Oregon, where she began playing water polo at age 10. She was selected to play for the Pacific Northwest Zone Team in the USA Water Polo Olympic Development Program (ODP) National Championships from ages 11-13 before relocating to Manhattan Beach just prior to high school. Riley was on the Mira Costa Girls Varsity Water Polo team all four years - having been one of just three girls selected to "Varsity Training" as a Freshman. During high school, she was twice selected to play for the Coastal Zone Team in USA Water Polo's Olympic Development Program National Championships. She played for Trojan Water Polo Club, including in USA Water Polo's Junior Olympics over several Summers, before joining Palos Verdes Water Polo Club this spring. Riley loves Mira Costa and is a highly engaged student-athlete. She has been an exceptional student - with a 4.3 weighted GPA and on Honor Roll every semester. She is currently ASB Treasurer and has been on ASB for three years. She is also digital editor of the La Vista Newspaper as she loves to write and hopes to pursue a career in media and journalism.
Alana Clarke will be attending UC Santa Barbara and running for their cross country/track and field team. Alana has been a member of the Mira Costa Cross Country team since her sophomore year and a part of the track team for the previous four years. Also, she has been a scholar athlete since her freshman year. Alana thanks her family, teammates, coaches Renee and Rebecca, and her friends for their support throughout the years, and can't wait to continue her running career next year.
Eric DaCosta is excited to attend Iona University in New York, where he plans to study business and compete for the men’s golf team. A four-year varsity golfer at Mira Costa, Eric also played football during his freshman and sophomore years and has been recognized as a scholar-athlete since he was a freshman. A fun fact about Eric, he holds the record for the lowest round in Bay League history (63, -9) and is also the youngest golfer to score an albatross at Riviera Country Club. Eric thanks his family, friends, and coaches for their continued support.
Carson Ehman will be attending University of California, Santa Barbara this fall, where he plans to study economics and compete in cross country and track. He will be joining a prestigious program under the guidance of former Olympian PattiSue Plumer. A dedicated scholar athlete, Carson has established himself as one of the top distance runners in Mira Costa history and helped his team achieve national recognition.
Specializing in the 3200 meters, he is the fastest sophomore and junior
in school history and ranks among the program’s all-time greats. He has
run a 9:00 3200 and placed 8th at the state cross country meet, recording the second-fastest state time ever by a Mira Costa athlete. Carson also played a key role as a top two runner on the first Mira Costa cross country team to qualify for nationals. Known for his discipline, resilience, and competitive drive, Carson has consistently balanced academic excellence with elite athletic performance. His work ethic and leadership have set a standard for his teammates and peers. Carson thanks his mom, coaches, teammates, and the Costa community for their unwavering support, and is excited to continue competing at the next level and to contribute to the legacy of the Gauchos.
Sophia Elston will attend Northwestern University, where she will compete for the Wildcats fencing team. She has fenced épée since third grade and has earned 676 career victories over nearly a decade in the sport. Sophia is a four-time USA Fencing First Team All-American and a four-time First Team All-Academic honoree. She holds an A26 rating and is currently ranked No. 1 in her region. She is nationally ranked No. 55 in Junior Women’s Épée and No. 64 in Division I. She trains at Los Angeles International Fencing Center and thanks her family and coaches for all their love and support. With a plan to major in biomedical engineering, she looks forward to beginning her collegiate fencing career this fall.
Malia Rose Fernandez will be attending Point Loma Nazarene University and competing for BIG Lomas tennis team. Malia has been a member of the Mira Costa varsity tennis team since her freshman year and has worked extremely hard to improve and compete at the collegiate level. Malia is best known for her work ethic and going the extra distance just for the love of the game. She thanks her family, friends, and coaches for all their support throughout the years and is looking forward to continuing her tennis career.
Peyton Kuo will be attending Claremont McKenna College and competing for the CMS Stags swim team. Peyton has been a member of the Mira Costa varsity swim team since his freshman year while also earning MVP for 3 years running. Peyton has also been a proud scholar athlete since his freshman year. When not competing for Mira Costa, he swims club with Beach Cities Alpha. Peyton thanks his family, friends, and coaches for all their support throughout the years and can't wait to continue his swim career in college next year.
Cade Lagerwey, varsity soccer captain, is headed to Emerson College. Cade spent four years in the Costa soccer program anchoring its defense and jump-starting its offense with power, intelligence, and determination. His leadership lead us to another Open Division berth this year where his consummate ability to compete saw him score the team's one goal even as the game was all but done and dusted. As a four-year Scholar Athlete, Cade approaches his education the same way he approaches his sport—endless effort, precision, and with a determination to grow. Outside of Costa, Cade has excelled at the top level of club soccer, playing for ECNL clubs that are amongst the best in the nation. His coaches say he has left an indelible mark on Costa and the Costa soccer program.
Caroline Love will be attending SUNY Geneseo to study geological sciences and play quarterback for the Knights' flag football team. During her time at Costa, in addition to playing basketball and softball, Caroline was one of the founding members of the inaugural Flag Football team, where she played quarterback for the last three years, bringing home a Bay League Championship and the program's first CIF win. Caroline received 2nd Team All-League recognition in her Senior year, and currently plays flag as a member of the BCS Gold club team and BCS adult league. Caroline thanks her family, friends and coaches for believing in her and cheering her on! She is excited to live out her dream of playing flag football in college under Coaches Currin and Summerfield.
Brooklyn Lyke will continue her academic and athletic career at Loyola University New Orleans. Brooklyn serves as team captain, and a scholar-athlete, She has balanced the demands of competitive golf and academics with excellence. She was ranked 30th in past quarter SCPGA and has earned the opportunity to compete at a high level, including qualifying for regionals in the Notah Begay III Junior Golf National Championship. Brooklyn’s journey in golf has been shaped by dedication, resilience, and the support of those around her. She is especially grateful to her coach, Jennefer Jones, whose guidance and mentorship have been instrumental in her development as both a player and a person. She also thanks her parents for their unwavering support—driving countless miles to tournaments, whether one-day events or weekend competitions—and her brother Cole for constantly pushing her to improve and serving as a steady source of motivation—even jokingly calling her a “cheater” when she outplayed him. She is thankful for the continued encouragement from her extended family and friends, and looks forward to the next chapter.
Ben Martin is ecstatic to be joining the rugby team at Colorado State University. He has no doubt it will be an exciting and rewarding experience. Ben played on the Mira Costa football team for four years and decided to try rugby during his off-season junior year. He loved the sport and played through senior year. He’s looking forward to learning rugby at a higher level and to the strong community of rugby players. He is thankful for the support and encouragement of his parents, coaches and teammates.
Jada Martin will attend Orange Coast College this fall and compete for the OCC Women's Basketball team, in arguably the most competitive conference in California. Jada has been a proud member of Mira Costa's girls’ varsity team for two years. During her senior season, her dedication and leadership were recognized by her teammates who voted her one of the team captains. Some standout moments of Jada's high school career came during her junior year, when she earned herself a spot on the First Team in Bay League. Jada will
study computer information systems and hopes to pursue a future career in technology. She thanks her coaches and teammates as well as her parents and siblings for being by her side every step of the way. She can't wait to take her game to the next level and continue her basketball journey at OCC.

Liam Meeker has been a multi-year varsity football starter who has emerged as one of the top quarterbacks in the South Bay. In his last two years, he threw for 3,000 yards and totaled 31 touchdowns. He also started at free safety for the Mustangs during his senior year with 43 tackles and hauling in 2 interceptions, with his versatility making him a huge part of Mira Costa’s success. Next up, he’s heading to play football for Sacramento State, where he’ll look to keep building on everything he started at Mira Costa. He thanks all of his coaches as well as his mom, dad, and brothers Luke and Rocky.
Luke Meeker is an all-area football standout known for his elite speed, sharp route-running, and ability to make plays in critical moments. A contributor on the varsity team since his sophomore year, Luke has developed into a dynamic offensive threat who creates separation and turns short gains into explosive plays. He competes at a high level, brings relentless energy, and consistently puts the team first. Luke’s work ethic, football IQ, and attention to detail set him apart, making him a reliable and dangerous weapon on the field. Luke is committed to play football at Sacramento State, where he is ready to embrace the next level and continue developing as both a player and a leader. He thanks his coaches and teammates for pushing him every day, and his parents and brothers Liam and Rocky for their constant support throughout his journey.
Lucas Pearce Lucas will be attending UC San Diego, where he will compete for the Tritons men’s water polo team as a center forward. Lucas has been a member of the Mira Costa water polo program for four years, including three years as a center forward on the varsity team. In addition to his high school career, Lucas has played club water polo for Trojan Water Polo for the past six years, competing at a high level and continuing to develop his skills. He was also selected as a member of the Team USA Water Polo ODP National Team in 2024 and 2025. Lucas thanks his family, friends, teammates, and coaches for their continued support and guidance throughout his journey, and excited to continue his academic and athletic career at UC San Diego.
Derek Salguero discovered his passion for soccer at a young age; he enjoys playing it regardless of where or with whom, but he also recognizes that it is a sport that demands great discipline. He enjoys everything that soccer entails—from maintaining good health to meeting people with whom he has built invaluable friendships. Derek thanks his family, friends, and coaches, who have stood by him throughout the years. He will attend CSU Dominguez Hills, where he will continue his soccer career playing for the Toros. He says that his time at Mira Costa has left a lasting mark on his personal growth and athletic development, and he will be proud to be a Mustang forever.
Maya Shepps will be attending Creighton University and is excited to row for the Blue Jays. Maya has been rowing at Marina Aquatic Center for the past 2 years. During her time at MAC, she has shown leadership and perseverance on and off the water, while also pushing those around her to do their best. Maya is excited to begin this chapter at Creighton University and continue to grow as both a student and an athlete. She is looking forward to studying exercise science and pursuing nursing. She thanks her family, friends, teammates and coaches for all of their support throughout high school.
Theodora Tuitopou will be attending Brown University playing on the women’s rugby team! She has been playing club rugby since she was 10 and has been on the Costa girls rugby team for four years. She’s played all positions on the field and has been a scholar-athlete since she was a freshman. She thanks her village of friends, family, coaches and teammates.
