Pennekamp Elementary Project Creates Two-Story Building

Feb 06, 2022 01:02PM ● By Mb News Staff
Over the past week, Pennekamp Elementary School has been adding classrooms... by crane. Pennekamp now boasts a two-story modular classroom building along Peck Ave. in Manhattan Beach.

The Pennekamp project involved adding 36 modular units to create a 2-story modern classroom structure, replacing some hardscape playground area and a small parking lot.

The addition is part of a modernization project paid for by local voters' support of Measure C in November 2016. The $114-million bond measure passed with 70% of the vote, authorizing funds to repair, renovate and rebuild Manhattan Beach schools.

"We’re thrilled to see the progress being made on the new Pennekamp classrooms," said Manhattan Beach Unified School District Superintendent John Bowes. "Our students can’t wait to use the new classrooms."

The steel-framed modular buildings have been stored partly near and around Begg Field, a staging area prior to this week's installation. The buildings were transported on truck beds and pieced together over a new foundation via crane.

District officials say each building weighs around 40,000 pounds.

Traffic along Peck Ave. was blocked last week from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. during the project.

A video of the installation is available here.
