Mira Costa Experiences Second Antisemitic Graffiti Incident in Two Weeks

May 18, 2026 09:58PM ● By Jeanne Fratello

A new incident of antisemitic graffiti - the second incident in as many weeks - has rattled the Mira Costa High School community.

The first incident was identified on April 30, when a student reported multiple swastikas drawn inside a handicap stall in a boys’ restroom on campus.

The most recent incident occurred on May 8, when an anonymous student report led to the discovery of a swastika drawing in a boys' restroom stall - the same stall where the previous graffiti was found.

MBUSD Superintendent John Bowes told parents in a May 18 email that following the initial incident, the Mira Costa administrative team, with district support, conducted a thorough review of available surveillance footage and investigative information - but staff was unable to determine a definitive time frame for when the initial vandalism occurred and have not yet been able to identify the individual(s) responsible.

Regarding the second incident, he wrote, given that staff had been monitoring the area more frequently following the first incident, there is a significantly smaller window of time in which the second act could have occurred. Mira Costa administration and campus security are actively reviewing footage and interviewing students who entered the restroom during the identified time frame.

"MBUSD recognizes the pain and concern incidents like these cause, particularly within our Jewish community," wrote Bowes in a statement. "Antisemitism and hate in any form are taken extremely seriously and stand in direct opposition to the values of safety, belonging, and respect that the district is committed to upholding across all campuses. We appreciate the continued partnership and support of our students, staff, families, and community as we work through these situations together."

Anyone with information related to this incident is asked to contact MBPD’s anonymous tip line at (310) 802-5171.

MBUSD Has Experienced Antisemitic Incidents in the Past

The Manhattan Beach schools - as well as the city of Manhattan Beach - have experienced a series of antisemitic incidents in the last few years, and most notably in 2022.

In October 2022, both MBUSD and the city of Manhattan Beach adopted the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s working definition of antisemitism (also adopted by the U.S. State Department) and endorsed the use of the working definition as a framework to identify discrimination rooted in antisemitism and for discussions to address such discrimination. The definition reads as follows:

"Antisemitism is a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of antisemitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities."

MBUSD also took steps such as adding the Pulitzer-prize winning graphic novel Maus by Art Spiegelman as a core literature selection to the middle school reading list. The district has also partnered with the Museum of Tolerance and the Holocaust Museum LA to create in-service presentations and educational learning opportunities for students, staff, and parents.

In November 2022, Manhattan Beach became the first Los Angeles County school district to earn the Anti-Defamation League's official "No Place for Hate" designation.

The events of 2022 also led in part to the creation of the South Bay Community Coalition Against Hate. A vigil in support of Israel held in October 2023 on the Manhattan Beach Pier drew several hundred people.
